MAURICE SEWELL ARMSTRONG 1894 – 1916 [AKA MORRIS SEWELL] [1]
17453 Lance Corporal Maurice Sewell Armstrong, 15th Battalion, the Durham Light Infantry, was killed in action 1 July 1916 and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme. He was 21 years old and is commemorated on the Butterknowle War Memorial and the memorial plaque in St. John the Evangelist Church, Lynesack. He was known as Morris Sewell and is commemorated under this name on both Butterknowle memorials but Army and CWGC record him as Maurice Sewell Armstrong.
ALBERT BURRELL 1884 – 1918 [2]
339885 Private Albert Burrell, the Labour Corps died 2 September 1918 and is buried in Cockfield Cemetery and commemorated on Cockfield War Memorial. He was 34 years old.
ROBERT WILLIAM CONLON 1880 – 1916 [3]
31058 Private Robert William Conlon, 2nd Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment died of wounds 13 September 1916 and he is buried at Peronne Road Cemetery, Maricourt. He was 36 years old and is commemorated on the Evenwood War Memorial.
JONATHAN RALPH FEATHERSTONE 1881 – 1917 [4]
14017 Private Jonathan Ralph Featherstone, 10th Battalion, the Durham Light Infantry died of pneumonia 28 February 1917 and is buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, France. He was 35 years old and is commemorated on the Etherley War Memorial and the Roll of Honour in St. Cuthbert’s Church, Etherley.
WALLACE FEATHERSTONE 1882 – 1917 [5]
18/65 Private Wallace Featherstone, 18th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry was killed in action 1 March 1917 and is buried at Gommecourt British Cemetery No. 2, Hebuterne, France. He was about 34 years old and commemorated on the Etherley War Memorial, the Roll of Honour in St. Cuthbert’s Church, Etherley and the Evenwood W.M.C. Memorial Plaque.

32120 Private John Charles Graves, 10th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry was killed in action, 16 September 1916 and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France. He was 33 years old and is commemorated on the Evenwood War Memorial.
GEORGE BRYAN HODGSON 1893-1917 [7]
CH/1419(S) Serjeant George Bryan Hodgson, 1st Royal Marine Battalion, Royal Marine Light Infantry was killed in action 20 May 1917 and is buried at Point-du-Jour Military Cemetery, Athies, France. He was 23 years old and is commemorated on the Butterknowle and Etherley War Memorials and the memorial plaques in St. John the Evangelist Church, Lynesack and Butterknowle Village Hall, formerly in Southside Methodist Chapel.
JOHN LENNARD 1886 – 1915 [8]
Second Mate John Lennard, S.S. Teeswood Mercantile Marine died from diabetes 23 October 1915 aged 28. He is buried at Fecamp (Le Val Aux Clercs) Communal Cemetery, France. A local commemoration has not been traced.
EDWARD MacNAMARA 1886 – 1917 [9]
2507391 Private Edward MacNamara, Canadian Infantry, Central Ontario Regiment died of pneumonia 29 August 1917. He is buried at Barrie Union Cemetery, Ontario, Canada. A local commemoration has not been traced.
WALTER MORLEY 1882-1918 [10]
243094 Private Walter Morley, 4th Battalion, The Yorkshire Regiment was killed in action 15 May 1918 and is buried at the ANZAC Cemetery, Sailly-sur-la-Lys, France. He was 35 years old and is commemorated on Evenwood War Memorial.
WILLIAM ALDERSON MOSES 1897 – 1918 [11]
220168 Private William Alderson Moses, 7th Battalion, The East Yorkshire Regiment was killed in action 8 June 1918 and is buried in Hawthorn Ridge Cemetery Number 1, Auchonvillers, France. He was 21 years old and is commemorated on Evenwood and Etherley War Memorials.
THOMAS PINKNEY 1883 – 1916 [12]
4073 Private Thomas Pinkney, 6th Battalion, the Durham Light Infantry was killed in action 2 April 1916 and is buried at Chester Farm Cemetery, Ypres, Belgium. He was 33 years old and is commemorated on the Cockfield War Memorial.
MATHEW THOMAS RAINE 1885 – 1917 [13]
54506 Rifleman Matthew Thomas Raine, 1/7th battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment was killed in action 9 October 1917 and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Flanders, Belgium. He was 32 years old and is commemorated on the Evenwood War Memorial.

54973 Acting Bombardier John Caleb Richards, 44th Company, Royal Garrison Artillery died 18 September 1915 and is buried at Pembroke Dock Military Cemetery, Wales. He is commemorated on the Etherley War Memorial and the Etherley Roll of Honour, St. Cuthbert’s Church, Etherley.
HENRY WHITWELL LOMPTON ROBINSON 1880-1917 [15]
26/572 Private Henry Whitwell Lompton Robinson 21st [Tyneside Scottish] Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers died of wounds 18 October 1917 aged 37. He is buried at Dozinghem Military Cemetery, Belgium and commemorated on Burnopfield War Memorial, County Durham.

250440 Private Oliver Rushford M.M., 1/6th Battalion, the Durham Light Infantry was killed in action 30 May 1918 and is commemorated on the Soissons Memorial, France. He was 24 years old and commemorated on the Evenwood and Etherley War Memorials and the Rolls of Honour in St. Paul’s Church, Evenwood and St. Cuthbert’s Church, Etherley.

6/1670 Lance Corporal John Cecil Abraham Sewell, 1/6th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry died of influenza and pneumonia 1 December 1918 and is buried in Evenwood Cemetery. He was 27 years old and is commemorated on the Cockfield War Memorial.

2842 Private John Robert Smith, 5th Battalion, the Guards Machine Gun Regiment died of pulmonary tuberculosis 8 April 1920 aged 22 and is commemorated on Cockfield War Memorial.
HERBERT WARDLE M.M. 1897-1917 [21]
131539 Sapper Herbert Wardle M.M. 234th Field Company Royal Engineers was killed in action 31 July 1917 and is buried at New Irish Farm, Ypres, Belgium. He was 20 years old and is commemorated on the Evenwood War Memorial.
JOHN ALFRED WARDLE 1880 -1916 [22]
3914 Private John Alfred Wardle, 1st/6th Battalion, the Durham Light Infantry was killed in action 1 October 1916. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme. He was 35 years old and is commemorated on the Chilton War Memorials in the parish church and the working men’s club.

18866 Private Thomas Watson, 7th Battalion, the Yorkshire Regiment was killed in action 1 July 1916 and is buried at Fricourt British Cemetery, France. He was 28 years old and is commemorated on the West Auckland War Memorial.
