Joseph Wilfred Hammond was born 6 August 1897 at Cockfield to William and Margaret and baptised 12 September 1897 at Etherley. By 1901 the family lived at 17 Esperley Lane. He attended Cockfield C. of E. School then the County School. By 1911, they lived at 8 Mayfield Terrace.
5 December 1916: he joined Royal Naval Air Service as an air mechanic [service no.224506, formerly RNVR6671]. He was transferred to the RAF 1 April 1918 and his civilian occupation was described as a fitter. He received British War Medal.
In 1920, Joseph married Mabel Ann Armstrong from Lands. He died April 1985 in Hull aged 87.
