Mathew Henry BAXTER 1912-1938

Pilot Sergeant Mathew Henry “Harry” Baxter was killed in flight 4 April 1938 aged 25.  He is buried at West Auckland cemetery, commemorated on West Auckland War Memorial and the Church Lads Brigade memorial in St. Helen’s Church St. Helen’s Auckland, Bishop Auckland.[1]

Family Details

Mathew Henry “Harry” Baxter was born 1912[2], the son of John William and Margaret A. Baxter and brother to Lily, Elsie and Ethel.  In 1911, the family lived at Gas House, West Auckland and Harry’s father John worked as a gas fitter.[3]  In 1939, John and Margaret Baxter lived at 36 Station Road, West Auckland  and John worked as a “gas fitter chargeman” and was also a Special Constable.  There was one person other living at home [record closed].[4]

Service Details

The service details of Pilot Sergeant Mathew Henry “Harry” Baxter have not been researched.  It is known that he was “killed in flight 4 April 1938” near Racton, Chichester, West Sussex.[5]

Pilot Sergeant Mathew Henry “Harry” Baxter is buried at West Auckland cemetery [grave reference unknown].  He is commemorated on the Church Lads’ Brigade memorial, St. Helen’s Church
