DENT William Arthur

William Arthur DENT 1923 – 1943

1522988 Sergeant U/T Pilot William Arthur Dent RAF Volunteer Reserve died 26 July 1943 aged 20.  He is buried at Harare [Pioneer] Cemetery, Zimbabwe and commemorated on Etherley War Memorial.[1]

Family Details

William Arthur Dent was born 1923, the son of Arthur and Elizabeth Annie Dent.  In 1911 and up to February 1919 at least Arthur lived at Low Gordon Farm near Evenwood.[2]

Service Details

The service details of Sergeant Under Training Pilot William A. Dent have not been researched.  Another Pilot died on the same day, 1348081 Sergeant I.T. Thompson and is buried next to William Dent.

Then Zimbabwe was known as Southern Rhodesia and Harare as Salisbury.  From May 1940 to March 1954, the RAF had a presence in Rhodesia in the form of the Rhodesian Air Training Group which trained aircrew for the RAF.  In total, some 8,235 Allied pilots, navigators, gunners, ground crew and others were trained here.  There are 446 graves maintained by the CWGC which infers a 5.4% fatality rate.[3]  It is presumed that U/T Pilot W. A. Dent and Sergeant Pilot I.T. Thompson were killed in a training accident.

Burial [4]

Sergeant U/T Pilot William Arthur Dent is buried at grave 108 Harare [Pioneer] Cemetery, Zimbabwe.  The following words are inscribed on his headstone:

Blessed

Are the pure in heart

For they shall see God
