Pioneer W.E. Corner

William Edgar Corner 1897-1973

458760 Pioneer W.E. Corner Royal Engineers was born in 1897 at Cockfield, the son of John and Sarah Jane, his father being a coal miner [hewer].  In 1901, the family lived at Burnt Houses.  William attended Cockfield C. of E. School then the Council School and they now lived at Mayfield Terrace.  He joined his local Territorial Force, the 6/DLI [regimental number 4117, then 203856] and was transferred to the Royal Engineers.  He was awarded the British War and Victory medals.  In December 1920, he married Mabel Watson.  He died September 1973 aged 76.
