Private David ROBERTS 1916 – 1940

5255352 Private David Roberts, 10th Battalion, the Worcestershire Regiment died 28 August 1940 aged 24 and is buried in Cockfield Cemetery [1]and commemorated on Cockfield War Memorial.

Family Details

David Roberts was born c.1916, the son of Benjamin and Mary Annie Roberts.[2]

In 1937 David Roberts married Alice Kirby.[3]  In 1939, Alice Roberts lived at 13 Model Terrace, Cockfield with her mother Elizabeth and sister Freda.  Alice was recorded as an evacuee. Benjamin and Mary Roberts lived at the Bank, Barnard Castle.[4]  David is not recorded at either address.

Service Record

David Roberts service record has not been researched.

The 10th Battalion, Worcestershire Regiment was assigned to the 183rd Infantry Brigade, alongside the 7th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment and 4th BattalionNorthamptonshire Regiment, and came under the orders of the 61st Infantry Division.  It remained in the United Kingdom throughout the war.[5]

It is highly likely that David Roberts died of sickness or accident while serving in the Army.

Burial

Private David Roberts is buried at grave reference Line G.1. Grave 9, Cockfield Cemetery and is commemorated on Cockfield War Memorial.
