William SANDERS 1919 – 1945

2010174 Sapper William Sanders, Royal Engineers died 14 September 1945 aged 25 and is buries in Etherley [St. Cuthbert] Churchyard, Bishop Auckland and is commemorated on the War Memorial in St. Cuthbert’s Church, Etherley. [1]

Family Details

William was born 24 December 1919,[2] the son of William and Elizabeth Sanders and brother to Ada and George.  In 1939, the family lived at Pansy Villa, Etherley Grange.  William senior was a general labourer, Ada is recorded as employed as a hairdresser, William was a “coach painter” and George, a “coach builder”.[3]  In 1944, William married Irene B.M. Foster.[4]

The service record of Sapper William Sanders has not been researched.  The circumstances surrounding his death remain unknown.

Sapper William Sanders, Royal Engineers is buried at grave reference 471, Etherley [St. Cuthbert] Churchyard, Bishop Auckland and is commemorated on the War Memorial in St. Cuthbert’s Church, Etherley.[5]
