James Boustead Salkeld 1889-1966

630905 [formerly 2721] Sergeant-Major J.B. Salkeld, 20/London Regiment was born in 1889 at Distington, Cumberland to John and Mary, father was a farmer.  1901: lived at the Brewery House Hotel, Harrington, Workington where his father was the innkeeper.  1910:  he was an elementary school teacher at Cockfield County Mixed School and lived with Ralph & Ellen Smurthwaite.  1911: left Cockfield.  1914: James enlisted and he saw action in France [15 months], Macedonia [7 months] and Palestine [12 months].  He was awarded the Military Medal, the British War and Victory medals.  Died: 1966 aged 78 at Whitehaven.
